Keeping an Eye on Quality. More Updates ...

Durban, South Africa - based Ferroprint has come a long way. Three years ago, Ferroprint attained ISO 9001:2000 certification. But that's only one aspect of the company's total focus on quality. Also helping to maintain quality levels is a battery of automated label inspectors.

It was shortly before its ISO 9001:2000 certification that Ferroprint installed a new Rotoflex VSI 330 inspection slitter rewinder - at that stage the first slitter rewinder in the country to be fitted with Rotoflex's automated label inspection system.

That considerable investment was justified by the peace of mind brought by the system - not only to the company's production and QC teams but to customers as well, particularly those in the pharmaceutical sector.
By automating the inspection process, Ferroprint removes the risks involved with human visual inspection, and can confidently offer customers consistently defect-free labels.
The system uses a multiple-fault, high-speed positioning feature to assist the operator with efficient correction. A variety of defects can be detected. When the machine stops, the defective label is positioned for correction and the defective areas graphically indicated.
In addition, the quick feedback mechanism instantly shows the operator exactly what the defect is - whether it's a missing label, print defect, colour deviation or registration problem. The digital display on the inspection screen also registers web-speed fluctuations, and a simplified image of the print repeat is displayed.
The benefits of such an automated system are numerous: less time is spent on inspection, so production speed is accelerated; less material is wasted so costs are reduced; and the quality of the final product is enhanced, ensuring customer satisfaction.
'We're very impressed with the way in which the vision system meets the strict demands of our processes,' comments Chris Singh, production director. 'Each label's integrity is critical and the new vision system far exceeds the performance of earlier inspection systems, giving us an exceptionally strong competitive advantage in today's tough market,' he adds.
